ARTIST STATEMENT
In the most general sense, my work is about landscape. I grew up with the desert southwest as a backdrop and was visually taken by its sculpted topography; how the layered strata of the rock formations came to be exposed by erosion from wind and water, and how the incremental and chaotic effects of time and climate could conspire to create something more orderly than I could with my hands. My first drawings were tracings from road atlases that I collaged into fantasy political maps with fictionalized places. The maps thus began to function (though I didn’t see it in these terms at the time) metaphorically as well as spatially, as traces of passing time as well as unfolding space. Likewise, I saw the sandstone towers in the desert as maps of time, recording millions of years of wind erosion that just happened to look like modern art. Since, my art has resumed a focus on mapping and landscape, reflecting the dueling relationships between the natural and the man-made, the temporal and spatial and the objective and the subjective. Like the stratified rock on the Navajo reservation, where I spent much of my childhood, the forms in my work are often analogs to the methods of their creation. They take root in the physical properties inherent within specific, mundane materials such as Elmer’s glue, correction fluid, ballpoint pen ink and resin, whose limits are stretched by subjecting them to non-traditional applications, generating structures whose complexity belies the elegance of their creation. This process reflects the physical forces that are constantly working to fashion and sculpt the natural landscape, and, by bracketing these forms with hand-rendered and conventionalized images, I hope to evoke the duality between the actual and the artificial as it is conveyed through idealized representations of order and beauty.

Q. What do you think is the most under-rated vegetable?
A. I really like root vegetables because they’re lowly. They’re not regal items like foie gras, caviar, or truffles.
Things like rutabagas, turnips, kohlrabi and cabbage, they’re incredibly versatile. They develop really deep, deep flavors and touch all the sensors on the tongue, because of their sugar and salt. They have this really nice bitterness.
Bitterness is really important, I think bitterness is misunderstood a lot in cooking. So, that is what I like about root vegetables.

Q. What is essential with vegetables?
A. Seasonality. It’s a cliche, but it can’t be over emphasized. There are two things for the home cook:
1) you get the product at its peak
2) you also get it at its cheapest.
You’re not importing it in, it’s not some big footprint to getting it. So, it’s a win-win situation. I think a lot of lip service is paid to seasonality. You can go to a lot of famous chefs extolling the virtues of seasonality, but then you get a hamburger with a tomato on top in January and February. That, to me, is wrong. The artistic part of our craft is making that burger work without the tomato in January.

Rosalind Al-Aswad's work spans nearly fifteen years of painting and drawing. Her works are unique for both their artistic value and social perspective, offering us a personal glimpse into the political upheaval of a pre-Gulf War Iraq.
Al-Aswad translated the personal perspective of her Iraqi-born husband's family into painted testimonials of the Hussein regime. Al-Aswad's images of propaganda, loss, and destruction are especially relevant today in the context of the current Iraqi conflict. Al-Aswad developed her perspective as a feminist in the 1970's through her early career as a single working mother and a fashion designer for Sears Roebuck and others in Chicago. Al-Aswad made the bold decision to carry out her interest in fine arts at the age of 43, and enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received a BFA in Painting and Drawing in 1991. At the end of her life, as she was suffering from a degenerative neurological disorder, she gazed into a mirror and constructed self-portraits about the various roles one plays in everyday life. RIP Rosalind.

As an Italian brand founded in 1961 and based in Venice, Barena’s offerings are strongly inspired by their heritage. The three presidents of the label, Massimo Pigozzo, Giovanni Zara and Francesca Zara pay specific attention to the local culture, tradition, and textiles when drafting each collection. The brand name itself is in fact derived from the Venetian term baro, meaning a salt-water lagoon, which is essentially what lies beneath the isles of Venice. With a desire to support the rich textile culture that has long been a trademark of Italy, Barena focuses on using high quality natural textiles from wools to linens, often reproducing fabrics from the archives of historically prestigious Italian mills. Similar attention is paid to the research of the “peculiar” traditional dress codes from the Venice of yore for details and overarching themes that they then reinterpret in Barena’s seasonal collections; finding unique garments referenced in museums, antique markets, or vintage books. Historically, Venetian dress was dictated by their surrounding environment and an economy based around hunting, fishing, and agriculture. Barena applies the same principles of utility and long-lasting quality that were so integral back then to recreate the distinctive Venetian style they define as “lagunare”. The Japanese paper (washi) maker ONAO, located in Ichikawamisato, Yamanashi an area boasting a washi-making history spanning 1000 years - and industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa have teamed together to create the SIWA series. Fukasawa discerned that the special texture of Naoron, a paper developed by ONAO that doesn't tear easily, emerged when the paper was crumpled, and suggested designer for everyday goods that harnessed this. The name SIWA is both a reversing of the characters in the word washi, and a word meaning, "crinkle" in Japanese. As with leather goods, these washi products are lovingly individually crafted. Soft Naoron is a paper developed by ONAO company from wood pulp and polyolefin utilizing the washi-suki paper manufacturing method. it is soft and flexible, highly water-resistant and does not tear easily. Soft Naoron does not emit noxious fumes when burned. RPF Naoron (Recycled PET Fiber Naoron) is a paper created using the washi-suki paper manufacturing method from recycle polyester fibers from used plastic bottles and textile products. While having the distinctive texture of paper, it does not tear easily and is highly water-resistant. RPF Naoron does not emit noxious fumes when burned.

Olson Kundig Architects began with architect Jim Olson, whose work in the late 1960s explored the relationship between dwellings and the landscape they inhabit in the Northwest. Olson started the firm based on some simple ideas: that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Rick Sundberg joined the firm in 1975, and its commitment to urbanism became evident as they began designing modern buildings in and around Seattle’s national historic districts. Joseph Szabo is a teacher, photographer and author. He taught photography and art at Malverne High School on Long Island for 27 years and for over 20 years at the International Center of Photography in Manhattan. His 1978 book, “Almost Grown,” featured many of his students and was acclaimed as one of the “Best Books of the Year” by the American Library Association. Throughout the 80s and 90s, “Almost Grown” attained cult classic status in the fashion world, prompting Vogue editor Grace Coddington to notice that “all the young fashion photographers were looking at Joe’s photographs as their bible.” In 2003, Szabo released “Teenage” his more complete view of adolescents coming of age. His most recent book “Jones Beach” captures his forty year exploration of summer at New York’s most popular beach. Directors: David Khachatorian + George P. Ford was born in Austin, Texas, but spent most of his childhood in Santa Fe, Ford moved to NY to study art history at NYC, but after partying too hard during the Warhol/Studio 54 era, he dropped out and moved to LA. He worked as an actor for a while before moving back to NY to study architecture at Parsons School of Design. Tom Ford then transferred to Parsons' Paris campus, and in his final year of architecture he suddenly decided to switch to fashion. In 1990, Ford moved to Milan to join Gucci as the company's women's wear designer. In 1992, he became design director and in 1994 he was appointed creative director of Gucci. He designed all product lines, and headed all advertising campaigns and store design. In 2000, following the acquisition of Yves Saint Laurent and YSL Beaute by Gucci, Ford took over as creative director of Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche + YSL Beaute. Ford left Gucci in 2004 to then start his own brand, Tom Ford, in a year later with menswear and accessory collections. In 2009, Ford made his first film, A Single Man, starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. It was only after seeing this brilliant film that I fully appreciated the genius of Tom Ford. He is one of the most talented, versatile artists of our time. His vision for design and style has no boundaries-his work is both classic and trend-setting.
